Calendar of Events and Competitions

Virginia TSA provides a variety of awards and scholarships to individuals, chapters, and school divisions for a variety of exemplary activities. All applications for Virginia TSA’s special awards can be found in the Annual Virginia TSA Addendum in our Resources section.

Individual Awards

Member of the Year

Advisors have the opportunity to enter high-achieving TSA members to receive recognition at Technosphere.  Items considered include competition achievements,  offices held,  technology classes taken, and extracurricular activities.  The Member of the Year Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.

Advisor of the Year

Students have the opportunity to recognize advisors that have affected them in  positive ways.  Students are required to obtain the endorsement of two other chapter advisors and have access to information concerning the history of the chapter and the technology program that the school offers.  The Advisor of the Year Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere registration.

Region & State Level “STAR” Award

Students can become first a REGION “STAR” and then become eligible to become a Virginia “STAR.” During Regional events students may take advantage of taking the “STAR” test. This is a 50 question test that will challenge TSA members knowledge of TSA and Parliamentary procedure. TSA members must score a 90% to become a Region Star. Upon attaining Region Star status students will receive a single Star Pin signifying this achievement. They may then take the State Star test at Technosphere, a 75 question test of similar nature to the Region test. Again attaining State Star status requires a 90% score. A State Star pin will be awarded that fits over the Region Star Pin and signifies the six regions that complete the state.

George R. Willcox Leadership Scholarship Award

An advisor may recommend his or her member for the George R. Willcox Scholarship Award.  This scholarship is awarded considering a student’s grades, achievement test scores, accomplishments as a member of the Technology Student Association, and awards and recognition outside of TSA.  Students must be a resident of Virginia, a graduating senior accepted into a college or university granting a baccalaureate degree, a current member of a TSA chapter, and have demonstrated leadership ability.  The scholarship distributes $1,000 per year for up to four years in which the student is enrolled in a higher education program.  The George R. Willcox Leadership Scholarship Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.

Thomas A. Hughes Scholarship

Students may apply for the Thomas A. Hughes Scholarship Award.  This scholarship is designed for a student who is a resident of Virginia, a graduating senior who has been accepted into a college or university granting a baccalaureate degree, a current member of a TSA chapter, has demonstrated leadership potential, and has the desire to become a educator with certification in technology education.  This is a $1,000 scholarship.  The Thomas A. Hughes Scholarship Award Application is due February 1st of each year.

John Monroe Scholarship

Students may apply for the John Monroe Scholarship Award.  A student who is a resident of Virginia, is a graduating senior who has been accepted into a college or university granting a baccalaureate degree, is a current TSA member, has demonstrated leadership potential, and desires to be a teacher with certification in technology education may apply for this scholarship.  The John Monroe Scholarship Application is due February 1st of each year.

Chapter Awards

Chapter Excellence Award

Chapters that are dedicated to technology education can apply for the Chapter Excellence Award.  The chapter’s activities, participation, incorporation of technology education, inter-chapter participation, fundraising efforts, and involvement with alumni are factors that are considered in choosing the recipients of this award.  The Chapter Excellence Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.

Community Service Award

Chapters that participate in community service activities can apply for the Community Service Award.  The types of service projects are considered along with the numbers of hours committed to reaching out to the community.  The Community Service Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.

Century Award

Schools that affiliate one hundred or more students in the Technology Student Association, or affiliate the total technology education program, are eligible to receive recognition.  The Century Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.  The  Century Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.

School Division Awards

Commendation Award

School divisions that affiliate all secondary school technology education programs with the Technology Student Association are eligible to apply for the Commendation Award.  This award recognizes the school divisions that support the establishment and maintaining of TSA chapters.  The Commendation Award Application is due at the same time as the Technosphere Registration.
